French Grain Sack Typography Table

While shopping at the thrift store, this French Provincial table practically screamed 'take me home.' I had it in mind for a particular client to accompany a set of vintage striped bergere chairs.  I actually had it completely painted in my mind before I ever got it home.

It was in really good condition but we were completely puzzled why this was attached. Leave it to my 7-year-old to figure out that it fit a smart phone perfectly.  Hmmmmph.

Since I was painting the table to match these chairs, I went with the same color scheme.

Starting with General Finishes Driftwood as the base, I added Winter White glaze lightly on top.

The original top was damaged marble so since it needed replacing we chose to build a wooden replacement. Look at the perfect fit!  Triple Threat does high caliber work.

A grain sack stripe was the perfect accent to coordinate with the bergere chairs. Using painter's tape, I measured off the width I wanted for the stripes.

Then I filled in the stripes with General Finishes Lamp Black.

I am pretty proud of how perfectly I taped that grain sack stripe!

Once the stripe was completely dry, I went over the entire new top with the Winter White glaze to soften the finish.

It seemed like it was missing something (more racing stripe than grain sack) so I decided to add a stenciled wreath.  Nine is my favorite number and has a lot of significance in our family so I spontaneously free-handed that inside the wreath.

My client decided to put a floor lamp instead of a table between the bergere chairs so this French beauty is for sale.  Although, I've been thinking it would be a perfect printer table for my office.  I'd finally have a pretty place to store all my paper.  ;)

If you love the look of grain sack, I hope this makeover inspires you to tackle it on a piece of furniture.  In the meantime, you can pin for future inspiration!
