When I found this pair of vintage telephone tables I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them. After coming across an idea on Pinterest, I decided to turn them into Lego activity centers.  I felt a tinge of guilt for covering up someone's art but they desperately needed an update.

When we started cutting the hole out for a basket, the wood was so old and fragile, it split and chipped.  Luckily, I have a Triple Threat who can work a table saw like nobody's business.  

Triple Threat cut off the broken top so he could use it as a template to build a new one.

Using my orbital sander, I removed all the paint and finish to uncover beautiful maple wood.

After finding the perfect size basket at Tuesday Morning, Triple Threat cut the hole perfectly to hold it. Here's the brand new top and it's good as new..

I chose Klein Blue by General Finishes and applied their Van Dyke glaze to give it an aged appearance. 

We used heavy-duty epoxy to attach the Lego mat to the table.  

This is such a great activity table for children since it has a place to build and store Legos.  The best part is kids can leave their creations in place for as long as they want. I know my son always wants to save his builds for as long as possible!

If you come across one of these old end tables, scoop it up and convert to a Lego table! You could also make a Duplo version for younger kids.  These make great gifts and Christmas will be here before we know it.  :)
