Brass Fireplace Screen Makeover

Before you get rid of your outdated brass decor, let me show you an easy way to update it. Look away now if you are a brass lover!

I found this solid brass fireplace screen on an online garage sale site for close to nothing. Seriously, I researched it later and it is worth almost $500!

Aren't the embellishments on the panels pretty?

Using Rustoleum Paint & Primer in Oil Rubbed Bronze, I sprayed the entire screen to give a solid base coat. After it was dry, I repeated the process in case I missed any spots and for extra durability.

Using copper glaze, I dry brushed all of the appliques to add a hint of shimmer from the rest of the frame.  It's a subtle difference but creates some dimension and depth to the screen.

Once the fireplace screen was completely dry, I sealed it with spray poly in satin to protect my gorgeous new finish.

I'm thrilled with the brass to bronze makeover and knowing I saved this beautiful fireplace screen from certain fate with the rest of the unwanted brass in thrift stores across the country.

The total spent on this makeover (including the price of the fireplace screen itself) was only $40! Now, that's what I'd call a divine DIY project.

My original plan was to sell it but after seeing how perfectly it fit our fireplace, we decided to keep it.  What would you do?
