Rustic Armoire Makeover

One of my friends gave her backyard a resort-style makeover and she wanted a rustic armoire for her new outside pool cabana as extra storage. She found this pine armoire for practically nothing on Craigslist.

Such detailed wood grain always paints beautifully with all the knots and knobby areas.

She wanted a beach-glass color scheme to match her outdoor furniture and color scheme.  I started with a base coat of General Finishes Patina Green.  Once dry, I glazed the entire piece with Van Dyke Brown for an aged appearance (left door).

This wasn't the sea glass look we were going for, so next I dry brushed on Corinth Blue (right door) and then heavily distressed the entire armoire.

Isn't it amazing how much a second color adds depth and dimension?  This reminds me of a perfect piece of sea glass.

The trickiest part was painting around all the hardware.  Every bit of it was NAILED on so instead of trying to remove it and risk damaging the armoire, I painted around it (with a teeny, tiny paintbrush).

Now, my client has beautiful, beach-inspired storage for towels and pool toys.
