Country Cupboard Makeover

This small oak cupboard has been passed down in my client's family for years. For some reason, it reminds me of something people stored potatoes in a long time ago. That must be from all the years I watched Little House on the Prairie!
My client uses it to store her cookbooks and recipes and wanted an updated look to better match her traditional decor. The tiny knob and outdated oak gave it more of a country feel and she wanted something a little more glamorous.
She gave me full creative license with the only stipulation being she wanted it painted black. You can never go wrong with the LBD {Little Black Dress} in the painting world.
Unfortunately, the crack on the top derailed my initial idea of staining the top dark and painting the base black. Before I could get started on painting, the crack needed to be fixed.
Using my favorite CPR product and secret weapon for fixing cracks, chew marks, gouges, etc), I filled the crack and sanded smooth. After one coat of Lamp Black, the crack was undetectable.
I wanted to add something to the door for interesting detail and wasn't sure what it would be until I found this iron applique. It fit so precisely, it seemed it was made especially for this project.
The applique was rustic iron, so to glam it up a bit, I used my dry brushing technique to add some gold and bronze paint touches.
The faux finishing is subtle but it gave dimension and depth to the the flat iron. Once it was dry, Triple Threat attached it to the front of the cabinet door.
Since the inside of the cupboard was in great shape, I left the original rustic finish, which gave a nice contrast to the black paint.
Hobby Lobby never disappoints and I found the perfect iron handle to replace the small, wimpy original ceramic knob.
The ability paint and stain has to transform pieces always amazes me but I still can't get over how this cabinet went from country to chic.
If this country cupboard makeover inspires you to paint one of your outdated pieces, please let me know. I love hearing about your restyles too!
